Reparations

Of course Africans had a hand in slavery, but you have yet to present an actual argument as to why and how they should be responsible for paying reparations. If you come up with anything I'd be happy to hear you out!

Reparations need to come from the descendants of their fellow countrymen who sold them.

No and neither getting the life insurance money for your dads passing would not bring your father back or relive you of the grief and pain you feel, but it would pay a debt that is owed to you.

The fact is that our paying money to the descendants of slaves is not going to alleviate their ancestor's pain. Nor is minimizing the cruelty of slavery in faux history books going to make it into something benign.

If you can make a fact based argument for why and how they should then sure, maybe! I won't hold my breath!

Are you saying African kings a queens didn't round up opposing tribes and sell them as slaves.
Are you also saying the British and Americans didn't set up a blockade their ports to stop them.

Tri said America is behind social development among the affluent countries.

What affluent countries do you speak of and what social development are you speaking?

Tribune I feel like what your describing as throwing money at it is isn't really accurate. It would be like if I was a life insurance company and your father died and I illegally withheld his life insurance pay out from you and you come to me and say my father is dead I'm grieving I need to settle his affairs and I need the money you owe me. And I was like woah woah woah let's not be hasty the wounding of your fathers death is much deeper than that. We can't just throw money at this situation and expect you to feel better overnight. Besides it was your fathers life insurance policy. Not yours. You never even had a policy and I in fact no one living in this moment had that policy either.

There are people both for and against reparations for solid practical reasons. But the repub's had to make it a political issue.

I mentioned in a previous post that the USA was way ahead of the rest of the world technologically. But I failed mention that it was also way behind in social development among the affluent countries. The very idea that we can wipe the stain of slavery away by throwing money at it is ludicrous. Just as making statements like slave owners were kind to their human chattels and just trying to civilize them for their own good.
If we wise up and face up to our past, then we have a chance at having an even greater future. But denial or throwing money at the unsavory portions of our history will not erase them.

HB America and the British had to make the African kings and queens stop their slave trade. Will Africa pay their part of the reparations?

So, you still can't tell me what specific actions by Malcolm X or by the Nation of Islam under his leadership qualify him as a terrorist?

Also you do realize that X left the Nation of Islam and changed many of his views later in life?

And again, he HAD poor grades. It is VERY possible to have poor grades and then work hard to become the valedictorian. I don't understand why that is such a difficult concept for you. I'm sure there are tons of examples of people regardless of race who started out doing poorly in high school but began to work hard and achieved great things. In fact, college admissions folks love stuff like that. To me this is absolutely not an issue of race and you seem absolutely bent on making it one.

What are these federally mandated scholarships specific to black people? You do realize white people can attend HBCUs and even get minority scholarships for going there right? And you realize that those schools exist not to be exclusionary to white people, but because of segregation they had to exist if anyone black wanted to get an education.

I am very open to the idea of reparations. I think it could potentially be a good thing for the country. But, I like many other people think that it has to be specific in the way its rolled out and who gets it.

I listened to this podcast a couple years ago now and it was pretty insightful and interesting.

I think to qualify for the bulk of it you need to be descended from victims of the transatlantic slave trade. They lay out in the podcast possible ways to do that which seem to make sense. But I'd also be open to reparations for more recent and specific injustices. So I guess you could say I'm not 100% for any specific plan but I think it's a worthwhile discussion to have. Slaves built the wealth of America and were locked out of that wealth for a long time. Slavery has a legacy and if we can combat that legacy and change peoples lives for the better I think we should.

BS would a person of a different race have gotten the same opportunity the he got under the same circumstances?

That in itself is a very prestigious accomplishment.

Can you find what high school he attended? I can't, but based on his poor grades and suspensions I can imagine that he wasn't exactly valedictorian. But due to his race, he was still able to go to a federally chartered ivy league university for free.

He was a Fulbright Scholar, pretendian. Gheesh!
