What is racism?

What in heaven's name are they thinking with those costumes?

I don't understand your point, Bestill? I'm saying that, with no written literature or history, and hundreds of tribes with their own histories and beliefs, what are we supposed to teach?

The truth might be better. Have you ever been or participated in an elementary school thanksgiving program?

But they need to be clear on what they mean by that, because other arguments I've read were on how they should teach in ways that minorities can better learn... implying, of course, that they can't learn the same way that "European" white kids learn.

All kids learn differently, anti. There are all kinds of learning styles. Teachers know this.

And I strongly disagree with the definition saying that teaching European history "teaches Black and Indigenous students that their lives... are not worth learning about." They're using a concept of "this is the literature we have" and trying to turn it to "veiled racism."

Why do you reckon that is the only literature we have? Is it the veil?

Well not much changed then from my educational days to yours as you are quite young. But we know that. My own grandchildren that live here are taught pretty much the same.

"And I strongly disagree with the definition saying that teaching European history "teaches Black and Indigenous students that their lives... are not worth learning about." They're using a concept of "this is the literature we have" and trying to turn it to "veiled racism.""

Books by non-white authors exist. You keep acting like they don't. How many black authors were you assigned to read in high school? Just because certain cultures didn't have a written record doesn't mean we don't have modern scholarship on those cultures. Why do you think we don't know anything about them? Maybe because you were brought up in a system that undervalues anything not Eurocentric. And finally, I think teaching history, literature, music and art from a European point of view does in fact send a message that other cultures are not valued because if they did have value they would be taught.

Those stupid indigenous folks, right?... So before 1492there was nothing here worth learning about?

I don't understand your point, Bestill? I'm saying that, with no written literature or history, and hundreds of tribes with their own histories and beliefs, what are we supposed to teach?

We learned about Hugo Cortez and Montezuma, but what literature do we have from the Aztecs that we can teach?

Were you taught that the first Native Americans arrived in Europe five centuries before Columbus sailed? And not through Asia? How come you don't know that?

Two reasons:

1. It came from a genetic study in 2012, and I graduated a little before that.

2. It's a theory, not necessarily a fact.

You're getting lost on this one bullet point, though. As I said before, I have absolutely no problem with improvements on the teachings of history, and if that's what is meant by "Eurocentric curriculum" then I'm all for it.

But they need to be clear on what they mean by that, because other arguments I've read were on how they should teach in ways that minorities can better learn... implying, of course, that they can't learn the same way that "European" white kids learn.

And I strongly disagree with the definition saying that teaching European history "teaches Black and Indigenous students that their lives... are not worth learning about." They're using a concept of "this is the literature we have" and trying to turn it to "veiled racism."

I highly doubt anyone said, "let's hide all of these historic documents from Africa and the Cherokee because I don't want our superior white kids to learn about it."

Rats always flee the feed room when the lights come on.

For further examples of this principle, take note that virtually EVERY member of trumps cabinet and inner circle has either written a tell all book about the scandals and illegal behavior of the country's swampiest administration, or publicly quit working for the crook, or been indicted, no question however that trump is a rat infested brand.

What literary information do we have on the history of tribal nations like American Indians, Aztecs, Mayans, or Africans? There are currently 574 recognized American Indian tribes, and they ALL had different beliefs... with no concept of writing. What do we know of their history that we can even teach?

Same for Africa... with most of the literature being oral, and with much of the modern nation being run by warlords that change from week to week, what do we have to teach?

What literature we do have from Africa is going to be based on Islam... do we even have the ability to teach it without it being offensive to Muslims or Christians?

My point here is that the demand is unrealistic, and the definition is combative and racist: "you evil white people think that black history isn't worth knowing!"

You're proving my point with this response.

There is no one on here that has the underlying racist views as you do. You always try to put your guilt on someone else but you can't hide your own self. Go ahead and say dunce since that is your default
